Ways to improve pump efficiency
- Change to a more efficient pump.
- Example: switch an air pump to an electric-driven pump.
- Add a VFD if the flow is variable and being throttled.
- Pump efficiency changes exponentially with speed (affinity laws apply to centrifugal pumps; for example, 80% speed may require about 50% power).
- The exponent of 3 is theoretical; real-world best case is approximately 2.2.
- Use pump optimization strategies.
- Use pump staging.
- Use the minimum pump power needed to meet the flow requirement.
- Trim the impeller if reduced but constant flow is needed.
